Reset The Password On A Dell EqualLogic SAN

Resetting the password on a Dell EqualLogic SAN (PS Series) involves accessing the console port and using the CLI (Command Line Interface) to perform a password reset. Here’s how to do it:

🔐 Reset the Password on a Dell EqualLogic SAN (PS Series)

🧰 What You Need:

  • Serial/console cable (mini-USB or DB-9 depending on model)

  • Terminal emulator (like PuTTY, Tera Term, or HyperTerminal)

  • Access to the physical SAN controller

📝 Step-by-Step Password Reset Procedure

1. Connect to the Console

  • Power on or reboot the EqualLogic SAN controller.

  • Connect your laptop/PC to the controller via the serial cable.

  • Launch your terminal program:

    • Baud rate: 9600

    • Data bits: 8

    • Parity: None

    • Stop bits: 1

    • Flow control: None

2. Interrupt the Boot Process

  • As the controller boots, watch for a prompt or message to press a key to enter Boot Menu.

  • Press any key to enter the Boot Menu quickly.

3. Select the Option to Reset the Password

  • From the Boot Menu, look for an option similar to:

    pgsql
    4) Recover password
  • Type 4 and press Enter.

4. Follow the Prompts

  • The system will prompt for confirmation.

  • After confirming, the password will be reset to factory default, usually:

    • Username: grpadmin

    • Password: grpadmin

5. Reboot and Log In

  • Reboot the controller if it doesn’t automatically restart.

  • Log in with:

    makefile
    login: grpadmin password: grpadmin

6. (Optional) Change the Password Immediately

To avoid security issues, update the password:

bash
CLI> user select grpadmin CLI> password (Enter new password when prompted)

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • No data is lost during a password reset.

  • This process applies to most Dell EqualLogic PS Series SANs, including PS4100, PS6100, PS6210, etc.

  • If using a dual-controller array, ensure only one controller is active during the reset.
